In my third village study i visited BAGADGERI. This is 26km far from Hubli and its belongs to Kalagatagi taluk, which is with the population of 1440 and 283 family’s. The people of this village is very nice, kind heart, In this village study we had gone to focus on only one problem. In this i choosed open defecation problems among the women of Bagadgeri. In this study i came to know that for open defecation women’s are having many reasons in that some important reasons are,
1. Economic reason
2. Lack of space
3. They wont think this is a problem
4. women’s are not able to tell their problems inf rent of the family head, this showes that women’s are still not able to raise there voice for their problem.
5. lack of awarness about health
these are some important resons i found in this village.Because of this open defecation Most of the woman’s are facing the problems but still they are not able to tell their problems to head of the family. women’s are facing many problems because of open defecation, those are,
1. It is affecting women dignity
2. Women facing psychological stress
3. They have to go for defecation in the early morning or in the night, this is affecting there health.
4. They are westing lot of time to go open defecation
5. Risk-Insect baiting
these are some important problem which are facing by Bagadgeri women. According to me every women who is going for open defecation in every village may be facing same problems, which need to solve.
Dear Savitha
I appreciate the choosen problem in the village study. I too worked for improving the village sanitation, particularly for eliminating open defecation. Apart fromt he the reason you cited there are other factors come in the way of eliminating the open defecation. They are
1) Non availability of the suitable raw materials for construction of low cost toilet locally. Even in some village availabiltiy of trained mason too is a problem.
2) Induced cultural habit: I would like to explain a bit more on this. As more than 50 per cent of the village population is inhabited by elderly people say age of 60 and above. Culturally they have not used to it and also force others not to use toilet or even construct toilet near to their dwelling premises. This has inhibited the oter young ones too for nor accustomed to the use of toilet.
As you are all (I mean all Fellows) are looking to become social enterprenours, i suggest any one of you can think more on this probem and come out with some doable business plan. In my view there exist lots of challegnes in this area and also has lots of oppartunities.
Regards,
